Despite the difficult to access air filters, the 2002 Saab 9-3 SE is a relatively easy car to maintain, and would be a good choice for someone experienced in car maintenance. The headlight is easy to access, as you only have to reach behind the housing, and remove one cover to reliably access the bulb. Accessing the tail light assembly is easy, as there is a designated panel in the rear of the vehicle for access to the bulbs. This is easier access than you’ll find on other models. Checking the engine coolant fluid level is easy, as the fluid reservoir is very visible in the engine bay.
As previously stated, the air filters on the 2002 Saab 9-3 SE are difficult to replace. The cabin air filter is extremely problematic to replace, as you will have to remove many panels, and the wiper blades, in order to access the filter. This is more complicated replacement than on other models. You will need to remove a few torx bolts in order to access the engine air filter. The tools necessary for this may not be readily available for a repair. You will also need to remove a torx bolt to access the parking light on this vehicle. While this is not a difficult repair, torx bolts are less common than normal bolts, so you may not have the right tools to remove them.
